ABSTRACT

Arbitration, which offers an alternative dispute resolution to state courts, is by its very nature open to technological innovations, as these provide a competitive advantage in fast and cost-effective resolution of legal disputes. The fourth industrial revolution and its offspring, artificial intelligence (AI), have not left arbitration untouched. In what areas is AI already being used in arbitration? Are there limits to this development, or will machines take over the role of arbitrators in the not-too-distant future? What are the most important technological and legal constraints to this change at present? This study examines such questions.
